Knowledge Management

Knowledge Management mainly deals with –
understanding how technologies, people, and processes together influence business performance.

Business Performance can be restricted to just one activity in a library OR Library as a business unit within the organization OR the complete organization along with library.

Speaking in terms of LIS – Information retrieval , document management and workflow processing are the major areas in Knowledge Management.
Once work flow of each and every activity is written down, one can evaluate and study how to improve upon the workflow to make it more effective and efficient.

There are many free articles on KM, reading them will help to know more about KM and its application in libraries. Start with just one activity in a library where improvement is needed OR the activity that can have greater impact on users. Experiences gained will build more confidence.

Spare some time for self development

Day to day work at home/ office may not give you an opportunity to learn new things. But, we must mark a date(s)/ time for self development in our daily plan. That’s the only way to progress.

Any new ways/ ideas to learn new things?
By the way what new things do we wish to learn that can be implemented in our working environment?

Currently, I can think of web2.0 features only.

Steps to implement web2.0 tool in a library

Information on Internet is abundance.
But, the steps to go about introducing new web2.0 tools for library and information service can be broadly summarized as follows:
– Have clarity in what is needed.
– Short list the software options available
– Check for comparative data of software options
– Co-relate it with the requirements
– Co-ordinate with IT and study the available infrasturcture
– Keep experimental data/ information ready to be uploaded
– Test two/ three software options
– Become familiar with the features of web 2.0 tools
– Re-test the short listed softwares
– Feed sufficient relevant information
– Promote it amongst few users and get feedback
– Modify the information uploaded
– Have a special announcement of the new web2.0 tool

Now, most of the users will easily accept the new tool. All that users look for is — ease of use and relevant information. These steps can be commonly applied for any web2.0 tool to achieve a successful implementation.

Use of Blog in research library to capture tacit knowledge.

Use of Blog in research library to capture tacit knowledge.

Blog has features similar to discussion forums.  Hence, these features can be used to capture knowledge shared on the blog.  There can be separate project based categories within a blog.  Team members of each project will have the authority to write new posts in their category of the blog.  Other users can only view the text or add comments.  Knowledge sharing is essential to speed up their research activity.  Blog helps to get ideas from any user irrespective of his heirarchial level or location in an organisation.  Well, I have yet to use blog for project based categories and make it interactive for team members of a project.  In fact, first users should be made familiar with blog features.  A blog can be successful only if users are comfortable wtih it.  Are there any blogs used on similar line in Indian Libraries? Some one needs to do a survey.
